SUMMARY:ASERL Complimentary webinar: Beyond Retention: Mechanisms to Support Librarian Job and Career Success and Longevity
DESCRIPTION:Summary: A recent IMLS-funded grant project investigated the factors that impact librarians’ retention in the library and information science (LIS) field. Through a nation-wide survey and the completion of 30 semi-structured interviews\, the project found that while retention to the field was a concern for many participants\, the more salient concern was retention within their current jobs. This session will highlight the factors identified as most impactful for retaining librarians both in their positions and in the field\, as well as the contextual factors that supported resiliency. The presenters will engage participants in conversation around how individuals and organizations can respond to these factors and work collaboratively to better support librarian job and career retention. \nPresenters:\nDr. Mónica Colón-Aguirre is an associate professor at the University of South Carolina\, School of Information Science. She is a recipient of the Spectrum Doctoral Fellowship (2008) and has more than a decade of experience as an instructor and researcher. \nAmy VanScoy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Information Science at the University at Buffalo. Her research explores professional work and practitioner thinking in library and information science. \nDr. Kawanna M. Bright (she/her) is Associate Professor of Library Science at East Carolina University. Her current research focuses on assessment in libraries; equity\, diversity\, and inclusion (EDI) in libraries; the application of research methodology to the study of library and information science; and the liaison librarianship role in academic libraries.

SUMMARY:ASERL Complimentary webinar: Effective\, Sustainable\, and Practical Library Assessment
DESCRIPTION:Library assessment\, like many library operations\, is at an inflection point not unlike many other library services. The introduction of AI is influencing library assessment much like it is influencing other parts of the operations of an academic library. Therefore\, more than any other time in the past\, it is important to be aware of Socrates’ 7 critical thinking rules while we are ensuring effective\, sustainable\, and practical library assessment tools\, services\, and community forums.\nTransition and transformation is taking place in the ways the Library Assessment Conference will be offered in the future\, in the ways LibQUAL\, ClimateQUAL\, MINES of Libraries and similar tools are shifting from being available through established non-profit structures to an interest based community approach\, and in the ways we are being called to ensure that library assessment continues to be effective\, sustainable\, and practical. By effective we want to ensure that library assessment is delivering the maximum benefit it can deliver\, by sustainable we want to ensure that the evidence and the data are available in some form to the community\, and by practical we want to ensure that it informs real decision making in an impactful way.\nThe introduction of AI has challenged our thinking about library assessment.\nSo\, what do we\nWe will feature the future pathway for delivering LibQUAL and ClimateQUAL and at the same time iteratively building on improving the delivery of these protocols in ways that ensure they are effective\, sustainable\, and practical. We will follow up with discussions and community forums on how library transformations are reflected in what people expect and how this is changing over time in relation to expectations from library staff\, content\, access\, and library spaces. Outcomes: Share library improvement efforts that are supported through evidence and data Showcase LibQUAl score improvements associated with transformations in library services Discuss how libraries can continue to improve in future years

SUMMARY:New England Science Boot Camp for Librarians 2025
DESCRIPTION:The New England Science Boot Camp for Librarians programming centers around three topical lectures.  These lectures include one each in the life sciences\, physical sciences\, and health sciences from researchers in the discipline\, most often faculty at the host institution.  Each topical section will feature an overview speaker\, who summarizes the interests and scope of the discipline\, and a research lecturer\, whose presentation goes into more detail on a single research project.  Capstones focus on timely topics of professional development and are intended to be more interactive than the lectures. \nWhile this conference is focused on fostering networking in New England\, we welcome interested attendees from anywhere.  We look forward to seeing you for a fun and informative conference.

SUMMARY:Data Carpentry Workshop
DESCRIPTION:On May 18\, May 25\, June 1\, and June 8 from 1:00pm – 4:00pm EDT the AgNIC Data Working Group is hosting a Data Carpentry workshop for member librarians. \nThe Carpentries is a fiscally sponsored project of Community Initiatives. They teach skills that are immediately useful for researchers\, using lessons and datasets that allow researchers to quickly apply what they have learned to their own work. I am really excited about using the Data Carpentry curriculum here to help our AgNIC members become more efficient in their research. \nThis workshop is focused on Ecology data. The curriculum will include: \n\nData Organization in Spreadsheets for Ecologists\nData Cleaning with OpenRefine for Ecologists\nData Management with SQL for Ecologists\nData Analysis and Visualization in R for Ecologists\n\nThe target audience is learners who have little to no prior computational experience\, and the instructors put a priority on creating a friendly environment to empower researchers and enable data-driven discovery. Even those with some experience will benefit\, as the goal is to teach not only how to do analyses\, but how to manage the process to make it as automated and reproducible as possible. For instance\, after attending this workshop you will be able to: \n\nOrganize and clean data\nHave a basic understanding of SQL\nHave a basic understanding of R\n\nSpace is limited and it will likely fill quickly. Visit the workshop webpage at https://gengrubber.github.io/2023-05-18-AgNIC_online/ for more information\, and register at https://kstate.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9sK8jv3cMA0rZYy. Questions?
